About Self-Study...
Self-study is a normal part of all effective organizations. It has a special role in the life of college and university communities going through processes of accreditation and program review. While self-study is ideally ongoing, it takes on special meaning during an accreditation process. At this point a variety of special resources are usually devoted to self-study, and a particular effort is made to involve all parts of the university community, from trustees and faculty to support staff and students. No single source of data is used for self-study as it must examine issues of learning and university life from a variety of perspectives. Special efforts are also made to ensure the integrity of the process because a study that fails to reveal the true character of an institution may be meaningless. Toward the end of the process, a team of experts from other institutions visits to examine the institution and its self-study report.

Comments from our Self-Study Coordinator...

I sought the task of coordinating our self-study because I believe it represents an important opportunity to move Mansfield forward. We live in fast changing times, and it is important for us to examine carefully all that we do as an educational institution. I am convinced that only institutions which are able to understand themselves within the context of social and technological change will be able to thrive in the future. New challenges to the traditional university are emerging rapidly. Our Middle States self-study represent an opportunity to understand change and cope with significant challenges. These issues range from evolving student learning styles to Web-based education, as well as the growing dominance of technologically-based "learning companies," which are rapidly replacing traditional text publishers. We must explore how all parts of the Mansfield University community will be prepared to respond as we enter a new century of teaching, learning, and living on our residential campus.

Toward this end we have decided to focus our self-study on three key areas:

    Student Learning and Experiences

    Faculty Roles and Effectiveness, and

    Technical and Instructional Resources

Within each area we intend to carefully study cross-cutting themes, such as the future of teaching and learning, allocation of university resources, assessment strategies, and support for diversity initiatives. We also intend to involve all aspects and all members of the campus community in our study. While we will attempt to be respectful of your time, we need your perspectives and your ideas. In short, we will need your help to understand ourselves and envision a Mansfield University of the future.
