Mansfield Receives Middle States Accreditation

Mansfield University has earned accreditation through 2012 by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The accreditation followed an intensive self-study by Mansfield faculty, staff, students and trustees and a visit by an evaluation team composed of officials from eight colleges and universities.

In its report the team lauded the "renewed energy to provide quality baccalaureate and master's degree programs within its clearly defined geographic service area." It also cited improved student enrollment and renovated buildings as well as "an expanded sense of trust and collegiality, and a true sense of purpose."

The team gave high marks to the Good Neighbor Program, which provides an undergraduate tuition discount to residents in 16 adjoining Southern Tier counties. It noted the newly revised general education program as proof of MU's commitment to a liberal arts education. The program includes a first-year seminar, information literacy, global studies, and writing across the curriculum requirements among others.

In the area of recruiting, the report said, "the admissions staff members seem to embody the ethos of personal care that is part of the culture of Mansfield. Also, institutional marketing efforts are conducted with integrity." It also commended the university for its "strategic approach to recruitment and the shift to an enrollment management philosophy."

Middle States Self-Study Contains 32 Recommendations

After working for 18 months, the Accreditation Self-Study Steering Committee has completed Mansfield's report for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The report provides an overview of Mansfield's effectiveness as an institution. Strengths and challenges for the University are cited, and 32 specific recommendations are offered. According self-study coordinator Peter Keller, "the major conclusion is that Mansfield functions effectively as a regional public university. In the period since our last self-study, we have improved substantially in many areas that previously were considered weaknesses but now can be identified as significant strengths."

The Self-Study further concluded that "not only have we experienced an extended period of stability, but we have also begun to shape our future in ways that have the potential to transform Mansfield into a much more effective institution. Improved physical facilities, strong and seasoned leadership at multiple levels within the University, improved planning and accountability, modest increases in both enrollment and academic qualifications of entering students, and new efforts to enhance general education now represent important assets for Mansfield.

Chapters of the report are devoted to each of the three focus areas selected by the Self-Study Steering Committee in Spring 2000. Specific recommendations for improvement are suggested for each area.

A team of eight evaluatiors will visit Mansfiled between March 17 and 20 to review all aspects of campus functioning and assess the findings of the self-study. Link directly to the Executive Summary of the report. Faculty and staff may view the full report at the my.mansfield intranet site.
